Interdisciplinary fellowships help doctoral students reach their highest levels of achievement

More than 2,500 new graduate students arrive at Carolina – and they find many ways to engage within their campus and beyond

More than 270 students participated in the UNC-Chapel Hill Doctoral Hooding Ceremony held on the morning of May 7 in the Dean E. Smith Center. The ceremony recognizes graduate students receiving their doctoral degrees.

Donald J. Raleigh, the Jay Richard Judson distinguished professor of history at UNC-Chapel Hill, has received the 2016 Faculty Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring.

Taylor Livingston, a doctoral candidate in anthropology, has received the 2016 Boka W. Hadzija Award for Distinguished University Service by a Graduate or Professional Student.

Doreen Thierauf, a doctoral candidate in English at UNC-Chapel Hill, recently received a prestigious dissertation research award from the Midwest Victorian Studies Association.

The Off-Campus Dissertation Fellowship enables Carolina graduate students to conduct research across the globe: in the field, in libraries or archives far from the Chapel Hill campus. As a result, they can conduct research of the highest quality that makes significant contributions to new knowledge within their disciplines and around the world.

“I’ve always been interested in reaching across disciplinary boundaries,” says new Royster Distinguished Professor Marsha Collins. She shares her enthusiasm for the interdisciplinary Royster Society, as well as her belief in the uplifting power of education.

Theda Perdue, the Atlanta Distinguished Professor Emerita of Southern Culture, and Malinda Maynor Lowery, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Southern Oral History Program, talk about the importance of mentoring across a lifetime.
