Two doctoral students, the chair of The Graduate School’s Graduate Education Advancement Board and a campus organization providing research and education support for graduate students and early postdocs were among recipients of the recent University Diversity Awards.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion recognized all honorees on April 18 for “significant contribution, time and effort from Carolina community members towards advancing an inclusive climate for excellence in teaching, research, public service and academic endeavor.”
Awards are presented in six categories. Among the recipients:
- Meli Kimathi, a doctoral student in Communication Studies, and Deanna Sipes, a doctoral student in Allied Health Sciences, were honored within the graduate/professional student category.
- Kenneth Gaines Smith (’84), chair of The Graduate School’s Graduate Education Advancement Board (GEAB), was honored within the alumni category.
- The Seeding Postdoctoral Innovators in Research and Education, or SPIRE, program, was honored in the intergroup collaboration category. Brian Rybarczyk, assistant dean of academic and professional development within The Graduate School, is associate director of SPIRE.
